"The organization of information in web sites and
intranets is a major factor in determining success, and
yet many web development teams lack the understanding of
how to do the job well."
- Louis Rosenfeld and Peter
Morville ("Information Architecture for the World
Wide Web")
Effective web
sites are designed as complete "sites" -
not a group of individual web "pages." This may
sound obvious, but many web developers find it easier to
quickly generate a series of fancy looking pages than produce
a comprehensive design for the entire "site." While
this approach might appear to satisfy short term goals,
it is a recipe for failure.
Poorly organized
web sites are a major source of frustration to web users.
The lack of a site-wide "information
architecture" makes it difficult for users to locate,
use and understand information on the site. When users
can't find the information they want or need, they get
tired of trying, quit and go elsewhere.
At
Rolling Storm Communications, we make sure ALL sites
have a strong "Information Architecture" - an intuitive
organization of information that allows users to actually
enjoy using the site. We work with you to understand the
specific goals of the site, analyze available information
and produce a "site" architecture designed to
satisfy your needs.
"...the
main goal of most web projects should be to make it
easy for customers to perform useful tasks."
-
Jakob Nielson ("Designing Web Usability")
